Welcome to the IIC International
Institute of Coaching and 2010.
Many of you will take the New Year as a time
for looking forward and seizing the opportunity
to look back and acknowledge what has happened
during the past year while preparing your approach,
steps and tactics for the year ahead.
New Years Resolutions are a great way
to organise your goals and plot the activities
you will take to achieve those goals. For
some of you it will be a sigh of relief that
the year has ended and a new decade begun. While
for trained and knowing coaches we understand
that New Years Resolutions can happen
every single day, mainly because we choose to
live our life on purpose.
Professional coaches automatically take steps
to become more, do more and forge ahead with
daily actions towards the overall goal.
Over the years scores of coaches, coaches in
training and clients have asked me why personal
development is so important. The answer I have
always given is that with hope in your heart,
faith as part of your belief system and action
any obstacle can be overcome with goals being
achieved.
I would encourage you to continue to hone your
skills as a coach and take advantage of the
many membership benefits the IIC has to offer
alongside reading the information our team of
experts share with you each month within the
newsletter.

In these modern times of daily stresses, demands to meet deadlines and juggling responsibilities it is all too easy to slip into the thought process of dwelling only on what we have not achieved, what we could not fit in and what we would love to do but do not have time for.
More so than ever it is important for us to be our own champion and supporter. Even though we all have support networks, whether they are family, friends or colleagues only we can truly understand the demands made on our time and the effort involved to achieve all we need to on a daily basis. It is natural for us to focus on what we did not achieve rather than what we did, but if we look back over previous weeks and months we really have achieved an enormous amount of small successes.
Therefore, it falls to us to appreciate ourselves and what a fantastic job we are doing. Being our own champion means acknowledging all things we DID get done today. It also means recognising the value we added to others lives for example did we make someone laugh, did we take time to listen without distraction, did we put anothers needs before ours, did we follow through on a commitment regardless of the other demands we have? All of these are fantastic achievements and ones which we tend to completely overlook.
However, being your own champion also includes supporting your needs to ensure we remain healthy, balanced and able to function at our peak. Being your own champion means being aware of when to say "no" gently, even knowing when to say "yes"; when to take some time back for ourselves; when to focus on our priorities; when to accept we did our best to achieve everything we set out to do knowing we have the resources and potential to achieve our goals.
Understanding that the responsibility for our own self-care lies solely with us enables us to constantly grow and develop to ensure we are able to meet the goals we set ourselves. When you can be mindful of these issues you are truly being your own best champion.

Acknowledging
Our Own Achievements
Incongruent belief sometimes
pops up and confuses us about acknowledging our
own achievements.
Aligning all positive actions and results in the
correct order helps when a boost in self esteem
is needed.
Self success and the acknowledgment of the same
does actually play a relevant part in moving forward.
Self appreciation at a non arrogant level contributes
enormously to recognising all personal accomplishments
not only on a daily basis, but throughout the
year and in life generally.
How many times have you openly acknowledged your
successes in the past month, week or even day?
Do you know what they are and are you able to
instantly summon up your successes?
WHEN WAS THE LAST TIME YOU BLEW YOUR
OWN
It seems to be common human behaviour to under-appreciate
the little things accomplished every day. Automatically
good results get pushed to the back of the memory
story house and recall falls by the way side.
Why is that? It is because the brain remembers
events more easily when they are accompanied
by strong and compelling emotions. Therefore
the logical choice is to behave in a positive,
resilient and convincing manner at all times.
For some this is more easily said then done.
RECALL, REMIND AND BUILD SELF ESTEEM
Tap into your resources and begin with recalling
your successful moments. Do it often and do
it with delighted emotion as you recall the
good times. Search out your photographs capturing
the moments of gladness. Re-read any letters,
report cards, testimonials you have stashed
away and articles about success and personal
recognition.
Remind yourself of those good times, of the
celebrations and prizes you have acquired.
Literally surround yourself with reminders of
your success.
Gently but passionately build your self esteem
to high levels and share your enthusiasm with
others. Help yourself first and then guide others
around you to cultivate a high regard for self-esteem.
After all you are a coach and you have the tools
and training to commit to acknowledging your
achievements.
Walk your talk and talk your walk, you know
you can achieve anything if you set your mind
to it.

The International Coaching Register is for any individual who trades as a coach, who help individuals and/or organisations for example, establish a work life balance, manage stress levels and build communication skills amongst many other specialist areas.
Everyone who has qualified as a coach with a recognised coach training company should now take the opportunity to register. This will dramatically cut down on any misrepresentation that goes on within the industry. Many people have websites and call themselves a
coach but have no actual qualifications. The register will stop these people and raise the profile of genuine coaching and how it can transform people’s lives.
President of the IIC Gerard O’Donovan said “the register has been administered by the IIC for the benefit of the world of coaching and coaching clients. It is also a great way for coaches to get business as members of the public can search for registered coaches in their area. It brings coaching transparency at last.”

In the 19th Century William Wordsworth (English poet 177-1850) said “Not choice, but habit rules the unreflecting herd.”
Today we are all aware that habits can be our greatest supporter or our biggest enemy. Very often they take over our behaviours before we have even had a chance to make a conscious choice over how we react to a situation. Our brain seems to be on auto-pilot and our behaviour dutifully falls into line with what we have done over and over again in the past. Even though we are aware that this is the case stating “this always happens”, we seem quite content to sit back and blame them for our outcomes without taking responsibility or control over them. Nowadays the word "habit" has even developed negative connotations. One major area where this occurs regularly is when individuals are trying to lose weight, and often lose motivation and slip back into old eating behaviours. This outcome yet again reinforces their belief that they cannot control their weight as they have
not managed to in the past.
What we do know these days, however, is that we absolutely have the power to change negative habits if we choose to. We have the ability to control our actions through our conscious brain and re-programme our subconscious which stores our deeply ingrained habits.
Scientists now know that when we create new empowering habits we create new nerve connections for our thoughts to travel along in our brain. As these strengthen with positive thoughts, our new empowering beliefs and habits are embedded.
From puberty onwards the brain starts to predominantly preserve only the modes of thought that have been of most value during the first decade or so of life. From then on these thought processes become stronger and more ingrained, whether they are positive or negative. In time these form our habits.
Continuing to operate within the constraints of our habits therefore restricts the healthy development of our brain. We must ensure we continue to learn new things, undertake new experiences, consider a variety of options available to us and be curious in order to build new thought processes and unleash the power of our true potential. Even varying our routine in small ways, such as travelling to work in a different way, watching different television programmes, eating different foods breaks the stagnation of old routines and habits and opens a whole new world of possibilities for us to consider.
So by being flexible and making conscious positive choices in what we experience on a daily basis, we are quite literally developing our brains. Therefore, it is within our control to choose to make success a positive habit.
In order to develop success as a habit a good place to start is to know what you are good at. Take time to reflect on all the past successes you have had, in all areas of your life, notice what resources you used and how you learned the skills required to ensure success. From this foundation create a plan to develop further behaviours to build on for the future.
One of the first successes to acknowledge is changing a routine, even in a small way, which brings fresh new experiences to enjoy and reflect upon. By just changing one way of behaving in a small way, instantly creates a new thought pathway in your brain. The more positive and consistent the changes are, the stronger the brains pathways becomes until it has no other option but to process all thoughts through the empowering successful pathways that have developed.
